Ruairí Ó Murchú has been a TD since February 2020, retaining the seat for Sinn Féin that was previously held by Gerry Adams and Arthur Morgan.
Since his election to the Dáil, his issues of focus have been disability, mental health services and services for children with autism. He has also focused on communities impacted by crime and anti-social behaviour.
Between 2017 to 2020, he was a member of Louth County Council.
As a councillor, he was chair of Louth Drug and Alcohol Forum and a member of the North East Drugs Task Force, with interest areas including addiction, recovery and tackling the drugs crisis.
He says he is “committed to achieving a referendum on Irish Unity”.
He has been critical of the Government’s handling of the pandemic and has pushed for the families of those who died in nursing homes, such as Dealgan House, Dundalk, to get “the answers they have been searching for” through a proper inquiry.
