Sir, – In an attempt find something "interesting and amusing" in the Irish language debate, Hugh Linehan fails to come to grips with the more serious issue: equality (Weekend Review, September 2nd).
Do we, as Irish speakers, have the right to be treated equally with our English-speaking fellow citizens, ie in our own language? If not in Ireland, then where in the world? There is an existential aspect to the debate which Hugh Lenihan also misses.
With this right granted, Irish survives as a community language. Deny it, as is being done at present, and it does not. – Yours, etc,
