Soccer - League of Ireland round-up:Shamrock Rovers travelled to Terryland Park and came with the points after tonight's 1-0 win away to Galway United to leave Michael O'Neill's side top to the Premier Division table.
The visitors didn’t have long to wait to get their noses in front after Karl Sheppard found the Galway net after just seven minutes. It was to prove decisive for it was the only goal of the game.
Rovers moved the ball around with ease before Gary McCabe’s cross caught out the Galway defence with Sheppard, who played for Galway last season, able to head the ball home.
Galway tried to get back on level terms with Sean Kelly and Alan Murphy both going close.
Rovers, however, always seemed to have the measure of their opponents and in the second period Ronan Finn and Gary O’Neill both squandered chances to put the game beyond Galway’s reach.
Murphy blasted a late shot toward the Rovers goal but there was no way through for Sean Connor’s side.
Elsewhere there were wins for Derry away to Bohemians, while St Patrick’s Athletic and UCD both recorded home wins against Drogheda United and Sligo Rovers respectively. Dundalk and Bray Wanderers played out a goalless draw at Oriel Park.
