Conor Clifford handed six month gambling ban

Dundalk midfielder Conor Clifford has become the latest League of Ireland player to be suspended for betting offences. The 26-year-old having received a six month worldwide ban after admitting 112 breaches of the rules while he was living and playing in England.

News of the ban was communicated to the FAI on Friday and it comes into immediate effect. Clifford, who was suspended for the game against Finn Harps on the basis of having amassed five yellow cards, will miss the rest of Dundalk’s season but will benefit from the timing of the more substantial ban as he will be available to play again from April 2nd, just a matter of weeks into the new season.

Clifford's contract with Dundalk is up at the end of the current campaign. 
The total value of the bets involved is believed to be £600.

Dundalk said  in a statement that “since we were made aware of this matter we have co-operated fully with the (English) Football Association in their investigation.

This latest suspension follows the bans imposed on Athlone Town players Jason Lyons, Igor Labuts and Dragos Sfrijan.
