Chris Smalling’s holiday hospital visit due to food poisoning

Chris Smalling was rushed to hospital while on holiday in Bali after fainting because of food poisoning – but the Manchester United central defender has recovered.

Smalling is on holiday on the Indonesian island after playing in England’s disappointing Euro 2016 campaign, which was ended by Iceland knocking out Roy Hodgson’s side at the last-16 stage.

Smalling was taken to hospital on Sunday but has been given the all-clear and has resumed his holiday.

A club statement read: “Manchester United can clarify Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday, which resulted in him fainting on Sunday. The 26-year-old defender was taken to the hospital and is now feeling fine.

“Smalling is currently on vacation following his time with England at Euro 2016 before reporting back for pre-season training later this month.”

Following a major tournament players must have a minimum three-week break after the end of their participation. As England were eliminated on June 27th Smalling can return on July 19th, in time for United’s tour of China under their new manager, José Mourinho.

Mourinho, who was appointed in May following the sacking of Louis van Gaal, arrived at the club’s Carrington training ground on Monday for his first official day in the post.
