Sir, - I refer to your Editorial and Kathy Sheridan's article of January 5th about the ongoing carnage on our roads.
I am perplexed by the Government's procrastination about implementing a comprehensive road safety strategy. The benefits seem so obvious - a reduction in deaths and serious injuries, hundreds of millions of euro saved by accident and emergency services, lower insurance premiums.
So, why the lack of political will? There have been ample funds available in recent years for all sorts of projects. Is it beyond the wit of the Ministers sitting around the Cabinet table to exercise even a modicum of connecting responsibility to this serious issue?
There has to be a reason for the lack of progress. Politicians are always looking towards the next general election. Are they concerned that the introduction of a well resourced, effective road safety strategy might alienate our thousands of unqualified and inexperienced drivers? I wonder. - Yours, etc.,
