Sir, - To fund the collection and disposal of refuse, Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown Council has introduced an annual levy of £150 per bin per household. The problem arises where bins are shared. For instance, there is one housing complex for the elderly where there are 44 units, and the residents in each of these units have been billed for £150, and threatened with prosecution if they do not pay forthwith.
But each unit does not have a bin. Their refuse is collected daily by one of the staff in the complex, and in the course of a week fills 10 bins.
For the weekly emptying of these 10 bins the council expects to be paid £6,600 annually. That is £660 per bin. - Yours, etc.,
D.A. Levistonecooney, Upper Glenageary Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
