Sir, – Further to recent correspondence, when I was a kid, it was a church requirement to abstain from meat on a Friday. So most families had fish on a Friday.
However, when there was stormy weather on a Thursday and the fishing boats could not go out, there was no fish available on a Friday, there being few fridges or freezers then. So the Friday dinner had to be mashed potato with one or two lightly boiled eggs mixed through it. – Yours, etc,
