Zimbabwe's main opposition leader has been charged with inciting violence over his call to oust President Robert Mugabe at a September rally.

Mr Morgan Tsvangirai, who heads the year-old Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), appeared yesterday in magistrate's court where he was charged with inciting violence, police spokesman Mr Wayne Bvudzijena said.

Police had taken a statement from Mr Tsvangirai in October, 10 days after the rally where he allegedly called for Mr Mugabe's violent removal from office. At the time they declined to press charges.

Mr Tsvangirai has denied the charge. His case has been referred to high court where his trial is due to begin on April 30th, MDC official Mr Gandi Mudzingwa said.
