London - The British government lowered the age for gay sex from 18 to to 16 yesterday, saying it was bringing the law governing homosexuals into line with that for heterosexuals but incurring the wrath of church leaders.

The Labour Party invoked the little-used 1949 Parliament Act to overrule the House of Lords and send the controversial bill to Queen Elizabeth for approval. The move was denounced by the Conservatives.
