Two boys killed in farm accidents

A five-year-old boy died yesterday following an accident on a farm in Co Offaly. He was the second child to die on a farm over the bank holiday weekend.

The boy was at his family farm in Kincora, Ferbane, at about 3pm when he was struck by a tractor. His body was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

On Friday a three-year-old boy died in Cork after he was struck by a mechanical digger on a farm. The accident took place at Gortnascreeny, Drimoleague in west Cork at about 10.30am. He was taken to Bantry hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Six people died in four road crashes north and south of the Border over the weekend. On Sunday morning a woman in her 20s was killed when the vehicle she was driving hit a lamppost and a pillar on the N17 at Lurga near Charlestown, Co Mayo.

In the early hours of Saturday a woman in her 50s died in a crash near Moycullen, Co Galway. She was Margaret Keady, a mother of five from Slieveaneena, Moycullen.

In Northern Ireland a woman and a man died in a two-car crash outside Newry, Co Down, early on Saturday evening. They were named as Joan Connor (67), Drogheda, Co Louth, and Niall Murphy (19), Newry.

Two British soldiers, both aged 24, were killed when their car collided with a tractor near Cullybackey in Co Antrim on Friday night.
