THE first Test between Pakistan and Zimbabwe ended in an exciting draw as the tourists put up a defiant stand on the final day in Sheikhupura yesterday. Zimbabwe, who conceded a 178 run lead to Pakistan in the first innings, reached 241-7 when stumps were drawn with eight overs still remaining.
Zimbabwe were in trouble when they resumed their seconds innings yesterday at 38-1, losing skipper Alister Campbell lbw to Waqar Younis in a controversial decision by Pakistani umpire Khizar Hayat. Campbell, who made 15, was visibly displeased particularly as the bowler had not appealed.
However, David Houghton and Grant Flower came together and relieved the pressure by taking the score onto 124 when Flower was caught by Shadab Kabir off Saqlain Mushtaq for 46.
Flower's brother Andy and Houghton, due to retire after this series, added 35 runs before Houghton was bowled by Saqlain Mushtaq for 65 with Zimbabwe on 159. Zimbabwe's resistance appeared to be crumbling as Craig Wishart lasted only 26 balls and was bowled by Shahid Nazeer.
Guy Whittal joined Flower after tea with Zimbabwe on 189-5 and the two produced a match saving partnership of 54 runs, remaining together at the crease for more than a hour.
