Peter Wright believes his team for tomorrow's European men's tennis championship against Spain and Denmark will do well at the Belfast Indoor Tennis Centre. "Playing indoors on a fast surface favours us, Scott Barron is a power baseliner, John Doran is essentially a solid serve and volley man and Tommy Hamilton's form as an established doubles player on the US Collegiate scene is so reassuring that he could be one of the worlds best doubles players of the future," says Wright.
The Spanish team to meet Ireland tomorrow (5.00) have much higher ATP rankings than Wright's players but that does not worry him.
"George McGill, Hamilton and Doran are in college in America a situation that restricts their scope for earning points on the circuits," says Wright.
Spain's Francis Roig (151) and Tomas Carbonell (168) along with their playing captain Marcos Gorriz do not arrive in Belfast until today leaving their clay courters with little time to become accustomed to the fast indoor surface.
Anticipating the influence his players are capable of exerting, Wright does not expect too many rallies in any of the rubbers against the Spanish.
Denmark have players who have already made their mark on the satellite circuits. Jonathan Printzlau and Jan Axel Tribler are capable singles players in their own right but would be most dangerous in doubles.
