US TOUR:ATT NationalTournament host Tiger Woods turned up the heat on defending champion Anthony Kim by taking one-shot lead in the third round of the ATT National at Congressional Country Club, Blue Course in Bethesda, Maryland yesterday.
The five-birdie, one-bogey round took the world number one into the lead at 10-under-par 130 and one clear of Australian Rod Pampling who carded a seven-birdie 64.
Overnight leader Kim mixed three birdies with three bogeys for a level-par 70 and is two shots back in third place. Jim Furyk moved into fourth place on seven-under-par 133 after a 67.
US Open champion Lucas Glover followed an opening 69 by matching playing partner Woods with a 66 to take him to five under for the tournament.
“I didn’t drive the ball as well as I did on Thursday or hit my irons as crisp,” Woods said. “Either I hit it pretty close to the hole, within 10 feet, or I was missing greens. So it was a little bit of two ends today.”
WOMEN'S TOUR:Veronica Zorzi shot a five-under 68 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead over Lisa Holm Sorensen heading into the final round of the SAS Ladies Masters.
The two-time French Open winner carded a two-round total of 12-under -par 134 after a tougher second day at Larvik Golfklubb in Larvik, Norway.
After a parade of 11 birdies for a dazzling 62 on Thursday, Denmark’s Lisa Holm Sorensen signed for a 74 to finish on 10-under-par 136 in second place. Sorensen played her round in the windiest conditions yesterday afternoon but remained in contention for her second LET title.
Last week’s AIB Ladies Irish Open winner Diana Luna carded a 70 after an opening 67 and was placed third at nine-under-par 137.
CHALLENGE TOUR:Gareth Shaw found himself leading the Irish line in the Credit Suisse Challenge but at three under par trails leader John Parry by seven strokes and lies well back in the pack at the halfway stage.
A second round of 70 at Wylihof Golf Club, Luterbach, lifted Shaw 38 places to tied 44th with Colm Moriarty the only other Irishman to make it through to the weekend after a second round 71 took him to two-under-par.
Richard Kilpatrick started the day in a share of sixth place but plummeted down the field with a six over par 79 to miss the cut along with four other Irishman.
Parry, hit the front with a six under par 67. Seven birdies and only one dropped shot took him to 10-under-par 136 and one clear of Sweden’s Bjorn Pettersson.
AMATEUR:Ireland gave one of their most convincing performances of the week at Conwy in North Wales yesterday to overwhelm Iceland 4-1 in the European Amateur Team Championships and keep alive their hopes of a ninth place finish.
Ireland laid the foundations for their success by winning the foursomes match courtesy of Dara Lernihan and Cian Curley and when Dublins Brabazon Trophy winner Niall Kearney powered his way to 6 and 4 victory over Axel Boasson the winners of the past two years were well on their way.
England will meet Scotland in the final for the sixth time in the 50-year history of the European Amateur Team Championship tournament.
