In a rerun of the semi-final victory over St Benildus College, Whitty converted his side’s seventh spot-kick, saved the eighth St Patrick’s attempt by Dara McVeety before Conor Whittle slotted home the decisive penalty.

Whitty had kept De La Salle’s hopes alive in the second half of extra time with a superb save to deny a header from St Patrick’s substitute Jonathan Leddy.

Defeat would have been harsh on the Munster champions as they dominated the first half. Conor Coad was foiled by the St Patrick’s goalkeeper Joe Masterson from point-blank range before Chris Kervick and Kevin Flynn contrived to pass up gilt-edged chances. St Patrick’s striker Craig Murphy was inches wide with an acrobatic overhead kick on 53 minutes.Flynn missing another chance in the last minute but Whitty ensured they became the first Waterford team to claim the title.
