SCHOOLS' HOCKEY LEINSTER BOYS' SENIOR CUP FINAL: Wesley College 3 St Andrew's 0THE SCORELINE perhaps flattered Wesley College in this one, where the pressure from Irish champions St Andrew's simply couldn't penetrate a stiff defence and where Wesley's opportunism finally paid off in spades.

Three goals, the final two in the last 10 minutes, told a story of St Andrew’s pressing for much of the match and Wesley patiently biding their time, striking three times in the second half, twice when St Andrew’s were chasing the game.

It gives Wesley their fifth successive Leinster Senior Cup win, and deservedly too.

The cup is in their hands as much because of sharp goalkeeping from captain Kristian Fitzgerald as from a back division contribution from Peter English, Scott Wilkie, Neil Megarity and David McCrea, who frustrated enough to knock the hard-running St Andrew’s attack just that little bit askew.

It was a quiet first half with a lot of probing and running around midfield, but precious little circle penetration and neither goalkeeper worried. The best chance fell to St Andrew’s striker Sam O’Leary, who punched into the circle after 22 minutes, forcing Fitzgerald to save his initial shot and again as he sharply followed up on the rebound off the pads.

At that stage Wesley were finding it more difficult to find their front-runners, and even early in the second half Fitzgerald was called on again to stop another O’Leary reverse snap shot.

But midway through Wesley seemed to have weathered much of what was thrown at them. They had not conceded a score and had still to find space up front.

On 52 minutes Tom Samuel bullied his way into the circle and delightfully delivered a cross to Conor Motyer, who swept into an empty goal for 1-0.

That stunned St Andrew’s, who upped their game, but the more they sought an equaliser the more frustrated they became: six short corners overall offered nothing.

Eight minutes later Jamie Tobin broke for Wesley from his half and dribbled into the circle, but his effort was cleared by Fitzgerald. But this time the ball ran sweetly for the supporting YMCA player Luke Chadwick, whose reverse stick shot high into the net was easily the pick of the goals.

So at 2-0 down and desperate to stick a foot back into the game, St Andrew’s began to push hard once more.

But Wesley didn’t falter even with two sin-binned players to one from St Andrew’s. As ever, space opened with St Andrew’s throwing almost everything up the park, and Wesley’s and Germany’s Carl Eggert swept in right at the end from another break for 3-0.

In the Minor Cup, it was St Andrew’s who denied Wesley College their third title in a row when a late goal from Ben Campbell earned the Booterstown school a 3-2 win in extra time.

Lee Cole, son of former Irish under-21 David and nephew of former Irish captain Jonathan, hit two of the St Andrew’s goals, the first on 12 minutes from a short corner.

Jonathon Roberts equalised for Wesley three minutes later.

Alan Oglesby then put Wesley ahead in the second half with a tap-in, before a Cole penalty took the game to extra time. Campbell’s winner arrived from play in the last minute of extra time.
