MARK WAUGH hit 126 and captured the prized wicket of Sachin Tendulkar to fire Australia to a 16-run victory over India bin their World Cup group A day-night match in Bombay yesterday.

Waugh spurred Australia to 258 all out in exactly 50 overs and then, bowling off-spin, had Tendulkar stumped by Ian Healy to end a breathtaking 90 in 84 balls by the Indian opener.

Waugh struck three sixes and eight fours in his 135-ball innings, giving his side an ideal start by sharing a first wickets partnership of 103 in 22 overs with captain Mark Taylor, who made a fine 59.

However, having reached 232 for three, Australia squandered much of the good work as their last seven wickets tumbled for 26.
