Tom Watson wasted no time making his mark on the Senior PGA Tour, winning in just his second event on the 50-and-over circuit in Dallas thanks to a course-record 10-under-par 62 final round.

Watson captured the $195,000 (£125,000) first prize in the $1.3-million (£824,000) Bank One Championship at Bent Tree Country Club by finishing on the 20-under-par total of 196, five strokes better than Bruce Summerhays.

The five-time Open champion became eligible for the Senior Tour when he turned 50 on September 4th and made his debut last week, finishing 21st in Indianapolis.

A bogey-free final round of 62 was a career-best for Watson and was highlighted by an eagle at the par-five sixth hole.

"Things worked out right after the first hole today," said Watson, who opened with a par. "After making the putt at number one, I said, `let's just see if I can make a birdie on every other hole on the front nine to try to get low first and early'."

He got low early and stayed there by making birdies at the second, third, seventh and ninth and an eagle at the sixth to make the turn in 30. Watson didn't let up on the back nine, either. He ran off three straight birdies beginning on the 11th. "The stretch from 11 to 13 won the tournament for me," said Watson.

Scotland's Catriona Matthew narrowly failed to land her first title in five years on the LPGA circuit when she was edged out by a sizzling final round from Sweden's Maria Hjorth at the Safeco Classic in Washington.

Arizona-based Hjorth shot a career-best eight-under-par 64 to capture her first LPGA honour by two strokes from Matthew.

The Swede's 72-hole total of 17-under-par 271 was just one stroke off Patty Sheehan's 1990 tournament record.

Matthew carded a 69 to equal her best performance on the tour and finished two shots better than Tina Barrett, defending champion Annika Sorenstam of Sweden and Australia's Rachel Hetherington, the third-round leader.
