Ursuline take trophy by the narrowest of margins

URSULINE School, Thurles, won the All Ireland Schoolgirl's Cup by the narrowest of margins, in Bray yesterday. Ursuline finished level on points with Loreto, Bray, at the end of the tournament, so it was the prolific scoring of Thurles' captain, Elizabeth Jane Walsh, which gave the title to Munster on goal difference.

Walsh scored four of Thurles's five goals in the tournament. One of her goals gave Thurles a draw with Kilkenny College, South East's representative yesterday. It proved to be a vital goal as it gave Thurles enough points to tie with Bray. Thurles's coach, Annette Kelly, said that she could not speak highly enough of Walsh. She has led from the front all year. She has really been an inspiration to the whole team, said Kelly.

The event was narrowed down to a two horse race after Thursday's matches, so the match between Thurles and Loreto yesterday looked as if it would prove decisive. In the end it didn't, as neither team were able to break the other's defence and the match ended in a scoreless draw.

The result though was more beneficial for Thurles, as it meant Bray had to beat the Connacht team, Taylors Hill by a margin of four goals. This in the end was beyond Bray's capabilities, who had to settle for a 1-0 victory and runners up spot.
