Umistim got the better of stable-companion Cape Town to cause a 20-1 upset in the Group Three Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury yesterday. Both horses were sent from Richard Hannon's East Everleigh yard, with Cape Cross, 3-1 favourite on the strength of a promising debut Lingfield win a fortnight ago, expected to come out on top.

The market leader's chance was not helped by Zyz drifting left across him over a furlong out, leaving a space against the rail for Umistim and Dane O'Neill to nip up and win by a length and a quarter.

Zyz's rider Darryll Holland received a two-day suspension (November 1st & 2nd) for careless riding.

Michael Meredith, who sold this year's Sagitta 2000 Guineas winner Island Sands to Godolphin last winter, looks to have another useful performer in Island Sound, impressive winner of the Vodafone Conditions Stakes.

Starting at 6-5 the son of Turtle Island made every yard of the running under Neil Pollard and was eased down in the closing stages to beat Il Capitano by a length and a quarter, with seven back to Ethmaar.

Superior Premium followed up his Ascot win last time out by defying top-weight in the Gardner Merchant Rated Stakes, the fiveyear-old entire holding off 2-1 favourite Gaelic Storm by a neck.

Michael Tebbutt was banned for six days (November 1st to 6th inclusive) for irresponsible riding of a major nature on fifth-placed The Fugative, who was placed last.

Shadoof, third in the Cambridgeshire earlier this month, further advertised his talents ahead of an appearance at Newmarket's Horses In Training Sales on Monday by winning the Scottish Equitable/Jockeys Association Handicap.

Nicely sauntered to victory in the two-mile Vodafone Group Handicap.
