Tyrone give midfield role to Cavlin

Tyrone have named three newcomers to championship football in their side to face Fermanagh in Clones on Sunday. Into the team come left full back Paul McGuirk, Ciaran Gourley at left half back and Cormac McAnnallen at midfield where he will partner Ger Cavlin.

Seamus McCallen, Ciaran McBride and David McElroy are all out injured.

Three of last year's minor team are included among the substitutes. They are Pascal McConnell, who will under-study for his older brother Finbar, for the goal-keeping spot as well as Michael McGee and Kevin Hughes.

The selection of Ger Cavlin at midfield is a bold move but he is the type of player who responds to a challenge.

In the circumstances Tyrone have put together a side of considerable experience, particularly in attack.

The half forward line of Adrian Cush, Eoin Gormley and Brian Dooher seems particularly strong and the full forward line of Stephen Lawn, Matt McGleenan and Peter Canavan could compete with the best defenders in the country.

The introduction of two newcomers to championship football in the corner back and left half back positions seems a bit risky but both have experience of National League level and should fit neatly into an otherwise vastly experienced side.

Sligo have also named three newcomers to championship football for their Connacht semi-final against All-Ireland champions Galway at Markievicz Park on Sunday. Peter Walsh from Eastern Harps plays in goal for Pat Kilcoyne who is injured, James Joyce from Coolera-Strandhill comes in right corner back having figured in that position during the National League and Sean Flannery from Drumcliffe plays at right corner forward. All three have National League experience.

Fermangh have postponed selection of their team until later in the week. Their full forward, Sean Quinn, has a hamstring problem and is having treatment in the hope that he can take his place.

Otherwise all other players are available as Fermanagh face into the second round of the Ulster championship for the first time since they beat Antrim seven years ago.

In the meantime Guinness, who sponsor the All-Ireland hurling championship have launched a new hurling website. The site gives details of fixtures and results as well as previews of matches and many other aspects of hurling. The website can be accessed at www.guinness.ie and by entering "Live the Life".
