Triplett comes to dentist's aid

He's a Golf Masters rookie, he's well in the hunt for our overall top prize and he admits to making more than a few bob by betting on golf tournaments.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that we were writing again about Colin Rutherford from Lisburn who still tops our overall leaderboard with Glenmore Eagles 2. However the man in question this time is Fionn V Murphy, manager of second-placed Sizzlechest 2. By an incredible coincidence he sounds like the Co Louth version of Rutherford and admits he would happily give up his part-time work as a dentist if he could make a bit more from sports betting.

"I'm from a family of golf fanatics and, put it this way, if there's golf on then I'll find a television," says Murphy. "I came back from Britain this year so it's my first time in Golf Masters. It's great craic. It's the only thing I talk about with my bank manager (Gerry Wickham, previous winner of a fourball) and my girlfriend has had to learn all the names - Steve Flesch, Stephen Ames and all that."

Whatever about the family and the girlfriend, it's a pity we don't all have bank managers like Wickham. No doubt Murphy's credit rating will go up if gets the chance to lodge our overall winners' cheque for £15,000. To do that he will have to overhaul Rutherford and he moved £42,500 closer this week thanks mainly to another fine effort from Kirk Triplett who netted £80,000 as runner-up in the John Deere Classic.

"He's a favourite player of mine even though he's a bit of a choker. I suppose he got the monkey off his back with his first win in the Nissan earlier this year although that was before Golf Masters started. He's an engineering graduate from the University of Nevada and . . . "

We quickly interrupted before we got to hear what Triplett had eaten for breakfast. It was already clear that Murphy knew more about our tour members than anyone else we'd ever spoken to. Just in case Sizzlechest 2 fizzle out, we're going to send a polo shirt.

Apart from Triplett, Sizzlechest 2's only earnings this week came from Brian Davis (£1,500 for tied 75th at the Dutch Open) and Gary Murphy (£500 for missed cut). However, with many of the top players taking a break after the British Open, week 22 was always likely to be slim pickings for those at the top of our overall standings. Rutherford's Glenmore Eagles fared even worse with only Darren Clarke and Fredrik Jacobson contributing to a meagre haul of £38,000.

The top-10 manager with most to be pleased about was Colin Duggan. He used one of his remaining transfers to replace Matt Gogel with Triplett in his Colin Duggan 2 selection and he jumped from seventh to fourth with winnings of £118,000.

None of the top-five weekly teams are likely to pick up any of the big money as they are all outside the overall top 1,000. Pick of the bunch was CTB 1 managed by Michael Gilmartin from Goatstown. They included Triplett, Clarke, Lee Westwood and the unlikely trio of Jose Rivero (£39,750 for tied seventh in the Dutch Open), Len Mattiace (£34,000 for tied 10th in the John Deere Classic) and Paolo Quirici (31,000, tied 11th in the Dutch Open).

Many of the big guns are back in action this week. Clarke, Westwood and Colin Montgomerie are in Sweden for the Scandinavian Masters. Despite its modified stableford scoring system, standard Golf Masters rules apply to The International in Colorado where Ernie Els, David Duval, Notah Begay and Sergio Garcia are all in the field.
