Too one-sided to be serious

Winning by 15 points wasn't cause for unmitigated celebration on the part of UCD in Belfield yesterday

Winning by 15 points wasn't cause for unmitigated celebration on the part of UCD in Belfield yesterday. The powerful home team simply steamrolled a disappointing Trinity and ran out depressingly comprehensive winners. Dave Billings, the UCD GAA development officer, nonetheless had concerns on a couple of fronts.

"We won easily in the end but I'm not that happy. An awful lot of our scores were easy chances and we're not going to get them in every match," he said after referee Jim Turner had terminated proceedings.

On the broader question of whether the whole colours project was now in trouble given Trinity's lack of competitiveness across the board yesterday, Billings was diplomatic.

"I think this goes in cycles. When I was here in the seventies, Trinity were uncompetitive as well but the wheel turned. Eventually they got people like Pat Gilroy and Joe Brolly and the colours games were well contested. At the moment we have the upper hand but at this time of the year, it's hard to judge."

It's over seven years since Trinity last won one the football colours - traditionally the most competitive of the games although Trinity sprang a surprise hurling win in 1997 - and the fear is that UCD's scholarship scheme and games structure has given them an overwhelming advantage.

On the field, UCD killed the match by scoring 1-3 without replay before the interval. Ciaran McManus, the only survivor of UCD's last Sigerson win five years ago, gave a strong performance which included all three of his side's goals.

McManus was well supported by Joe Fallon and Cillian Purcell up front and an impressive defence that not alone shut out their opponents for most of the match but also won a stack of ball.

In the hurling match, UCD had a ridiculously easy 10-7 to 1-7 win with Brendan Murphy and Diarmuid Lynge helping themselves to three goals each. The women's football match also ended in victory for UCD (1-10 to 0-3) with Anne McGillicuddy scoring 1-4.
