The Indian Summer brought out the best in golfers last weekend with some very low scores taking major prizes around the country. Leading the field, however, must be Joe Thompson from Old Conna. A lifelong member of the club, Thompson is a very infrequent visitor to the winners' enclosure. But on Sunday it all came right for the 22 handicapper when he scored 50 stableford points in the singles competition. He went to the turn in 39 and covered the back nine in 41 for a gross 80 (nett 58) giving him 26 points on the front nine and 24 points on the way home.
Another player to blitz the field was Pat Cahill at Black Bush, who carded 48 points in the singles while Philip Troy was a runaway winner of the September Medal at Kilternan with an excellent 61 off an 18 handicap.
John Kilroy won the President's (Tom Giblin) prize when he breezed around St Margaret's in level par for 41 points while Gerry Molloy won the Medal final at the Castle with a seven-under-par 63 off a 17 handicap. Kieran Eager took the Honorary Secretary's (Tony Fetherstone) prize at Donabate with an outstanding score of 44 points. However, Eager, who plays off an 11 handicap, only won on the break of a tie from Donal Byrne who also carded 44 points. Richard Morgan left the field in his wake at Powerscourt. The 17 handicapper returned a nett 64. Morgan's win in the September medal earned him a place in the Smurfit Pro-Am where he will be joined by David Garvey, Peter Brown, Brian Murphy, Cathal Maguire and Colm Barrington.
