While still eligible to ride as a junior (under-18), Kelly competed in the senior ranks and won the Shay Elliott Memorial race and the Tour of Essex.

Kelly is ranked the fourth best cyclist of all time and was world number one from 1984 to 1989.

Roche first came to public attention as a 16-year-old when he was poised to win the English schoolboy championship but missed out because of mechanical difficulties.
