CRICKET ENTHUSIASTS are spoiled for choice this public holiday week-end with seven Conqueror Senior Cup first round matches listed for today, and a full programme of important Lewis Traub league encounters down for decision on Monday.
Reigning cup holders, The Hills, begin the defence of their title against Malahide today (11.0 am.). Captained by international, Declan Moore, The Hills are very much a family club and go into the game with nine of last season's successful side again in action.
Thus they have a nice age mix, with youngsters Paul Mooney, Joseph Clinton, the Archer brothers Stephen and Barry, along with 18-year-old Patrick Byrne blending in well with the experience of Matt Dwyer, truly a player for the big occasion, wicket-keeper brother Mick, Mark Clinton, Noel Harper and Patrick Hoare.
But boosted by the return of Brian Gilmore, the seasiders are capable of giving them a searching examination and an absorbing afternoon should ensue.
Incidentally, it is a stamina sapping week-end for The Hills, for they make the long journey to Cork tomorrow for a league game against Cork County, which was brought forward from Monday.
The Joyce clan are well represented in the Merrion squad at home to CYM. There is Ed Joyce, who made an unbeaten century last week in their victory over Ardmore in the Royal Liver All Ireland Cup, as well as brothers Gus, Damien and Dom.
