While the Ryder Cup itself has been put in abeyance for another year, club golfers in the midlands will take part in their own version - called The Rider Cup - at Highfield Golf Club. This interpretation of the matches will see 10-man teams from Highfield, The Curragh, Co Meath, Castle Barna, Woodlands and Edenderry go head-to-head in competition on Saturday and Sunday in the inaugural staging of the event.
Each team consists of 10 players - eight selected from each respective club's Golfer of the Year order of merit with two captain's wild-card selections - with the teams playing foursomes and fourball matches on Saturday followed by singles on Sunday.
Indeed, this promises to be a busy weekend for the Highfield club. A Pro-Am that was originally scheduled to take place on September 14th, but which was postponed as a mark of respect to those killed in the terrorist atrocities in the United States, has been rescheduled for Friday next.
