AIRTRICITY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION: UCD 0 Shelbourne 2DESPITE BEING down to 10 men after just 14 minutes following a red card for defender Seán Byrne, Shelbourne ran out deserved winners in last night's tense Premier Division clash at the Belfield Bowl.
The Reds took a sensational lead after just 16 seconds when winger Paddy Kavanagh crossed from the left for Phillip Gorman to rifle home from close range.
Defender Byrne was sent off by Cork referee Alan Kelly after a lunge on UCD’s Mark Langtry.
Gorman had the ball in the UCD net again after 34 minutes but his effort was disallowed as the ball had previously crossed the byeline.
Despite their one-man advantage, UCD were unable to open up the visitors’ defence. Shelbourne nearly struck again after the interval when a misdirected pass by goalkeeper Mark McGinley was picked up by Gorman who fired narrowly wide from 20 yards.
Kavanagh then went close for the visitors when his deflected effort was grabbed by McGinley.
Derry’s best effort came via a 24-yard snap-shot by Paul Corry which was well saved by Dean Delany. Shelbourne sealed the win on 65 minutes when Kavanagh squared the ball for David Cassidy to sidefoot home at the far post.
