Sailing: Team Legato, the catamaran captained by Britain's Tony Bullimore, made a delayed start yesterday to The Race, a team round-the-world event with no assistance allowed.
The other five boats in the race started The Race on Sunday, but Team Legato had to spend the night notching up the remaining 150 miles necessary to qualify for the race and were also delayed by a lack of safety equipment which meets safety regulations.
Bullimore's yacht, crewed by an international crew, returned to port in Barcelona for a quick turnaround before crossing the start line and setting out to sea early yesterday in a bid to catch its competitors. ??????????????ee Globe race four years ago.
American skipper Cam Lewis of Team Adventure led The Race on Sunday, followed by Club Med and Warta PolPharma.
The catamarans will head around the southern tip of Africa and across the Indian Ocean to pass south of Australia and around Cape Horn before heading north past South America to finish in the southern French port of Marseille.
Hockey: Greater exposure to the premier grade enabled Three Rovers to prevail on strokes (3-2) in the Avoca Cup Leinster under-21 final at Grange Road yesterday after they had tied at 1-1 with UCD, writes Dermot Ashmore.
UCD had snatched the lead through Peter Veale after a mere 22 seconds and stout defending by Mark Treacy and Robin Willis, allied to sharp goalkeeping by Graham Woods, foiled Rovers of a breakthrough until five minutes from the end of normal time. A solo thrust by Stephen Findlater had deserved an earlier reward but perseverance by John Blakeney yielded the chance for Colin Huet to equalise.
Then, after no `golden goal' materialised, it was down to a shoot-out and after Wendel Armstrong had made a vital save, it was David Roche who netted the winning stroke.
