TA AWUN, twice-raced and already a filly of great promise, can make a successful transition into listed company by taking the Upavon Fillies' Stakes at Salisbury today.

Alec Stewart's daughter of Housebuster did not see a race-course as a juvenile but is firmly on an upward curve now.

A filly with scope and substance, she made her debut in a Goodwood maiden back in May, finishing an encouraging second to the John Gosden-trained North Song, going down by two and a half lengths.

Racereaders that afternoon opined that her turn was not far away, and so it proved on her next start at Ascot.

Starting the 3 to 1 second favourite for a maiden on the Friday of the Diamond meeting, Ta Awun set out to make all the running under Willie Carson.

With a quarter mile of the 10-furlong contest remaining, she had shaken off her rivals and came home an emphatic five lengths clear of Serenus.

Her official margin of victory could have been greater had her jockey so desired, and the performance established her as a filly progressing along very much the right lines.

With just two outings behind her, she is entitled to improve significantly on what she has achieved so far and is napped to continue her upward curve.

John Gosden's Altamura is another filly going the right way and should give the selection the most to do.

At Sandown, the Surrey Racing Handicap over a mile and three-quarters can go to Ballynakelly.

Reg Akehuist's exploits with handicappers have been well documented, but even by his own standards the Epsom trainer has excelled himself with this handsome chestnut.

Having won twice at Lingfield towards the end of last year Ballynakelly returned to complete his Equitrack hat-trick in January.

Off course for over six months subsequently, he went to Doncaster where, admittedly thrown in on his all-weather form, he made short work of 10 opponents before fallowing up at Lingfield, this time on turf, by a comfortable three lengths from Mr Copyforce.

He completed his turf hat-trick - and a six-timer in all - when beating Tudor Island by two and a half lengths at Sandown on his most recent start, having merely to be pushed out to justify 5 to 4 favouritism.

In the past Akehurst has complained about the treatment of his horses but in the case of Ballynakelly, he has nothing to grouse about.

The gelding has taken a further 6lb rise in the weights as a result of his Sandown win, but is expected to extend his sequence to seven.

At Beverley, The Wad should prove too speedy for his rivals in the Struthers And Carter Handicap.

Michael Kinane has been booked to ride Simon Dow's French scorer Wakeel in the Handicap de Normandie over a mile at Deauville tomorrow. Kinane will also partner the favourite for the Group One Prix, du Haras de Fresney-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois, Sensation

Geoff Wragg's Sasuru (Michael Hills) and Godolphin's Wall Street (Dettori) take their chance in the Group Two Prix Guillaume d'Ornano (10f) on the same card.
