Nicky English could not be accused of standing idly by yesterday, as he gave a fivestar show in making switches from the sidelines with co-selectors Ken Hogan and Jack Bergin. Partially motivated by his team's poor show, partially because of injuries, by the 25th minute only five Tipperary players were left in their original starting positions. Before the throw-in, Eugene O'Neill and Tommy Dunne switched - O'Neill, although named at 13 in his three starts this year, has always lined out in the left corner. Michael Ryan was the first casualty of the afternoon, whipped off after 18 minutes after Eugene Cloonan's bright start. Donnacha Fahey came in and switched corners with Paul Ormonde. The injury to Eamonn Corcoran six minutes later and the poor showing of his forwards and centrefield prompted English into a bout of heavy activity. Paul Kelly came on at wing forward. Micheal Ryan was brought back from centrefield to cover Corcoran, but switched with John Carroll. Centre forward Eddie Enright and corner forward Dunne were brought out to centrefield, John Leahy went to centre forward and Mark O'Leary to the right corner.

And so it went - in the second half changes included O'Leary and O'Neill switching, Andy Maloney, Eoin Kelly and Liam Cahill coming on, Paul Shelley finishing in the corner and Brian O'Meara at centre forward. Plus English's speciality - whipping off a player he introduced as a substitute. Against Waterford Paul Ryan suffered that fate, against Clare it was Cahill and yesterday it was Maloney's turn.
