Sligo 1-14 Cavan 0-14 KENNETH SWEENEY clinched Sligo's third home win on the trot with a late goal at Markievicz Park. Cavan were two points in front and playing with a lot of flair when Sweeney flicked the ball to the Breffni net in a crowded goalmouth in the 65th minute.
Man of the match Cian Mackey, who scored eight of the Cavan points, kept the visitors well in touch throughout until Sweeney settled matters.
Colm McGee had a superb 70 minutes for the Yeatsmen, scoring six points. Cavan opened the first half scoring with a couple of points by the impressive Mackey before McGee got Sligo off the mark in the sixth minute.
The teams were level on four occasions in the half before Mackey edged Cavan 0-8 to 0-7 ahead at half time.
Cavan full forward Michael Brennan had goal chances for the visitors in the 14th and 31st minutes but he narrowly missed the target on both occasions.
Brennan’s second shot at goal in the 31st minute was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Sligo keeper Philip Greene when the ball looked to be heading for the top corner of the net.
Cavan were dominant for most of the opening half but their challenge wilted when Sligo stepped up a gear late in the game.
