THOMAS ENQVIST came from behind in a roller coaster five setter with Daniel Vacek to steer Sweden into its ninth Davis Cup final in 14 years yesterday.
In the crunch World Group semi final clash in Prague, Enqvist took control from 5-5 in the fourth set to beat the Czech 6-3, 6-7 (7-3), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 and give his country an unassailable 3-1 lead.
Stefan Edberg wrapped up a comprehensive 4-1 victory as he also came from behind to defeat Petr Korda in a game reduced to three sets 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
The Swedes, who appeared in seven finals in a row from 1983-89 and have won the title five times, will now meet France in the showdown at the end of November.
Cedric Pioline and Arnaud Boetsch guided France into the final by taking both singles in a must win situation against Italy in Nantes. Italy entered the day needing just one victory but Pioline pushed France into a deciding match as he beat Renzo Furlan 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the opening singles.
Boetsch then crushed Andrea Gaudenzi, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) to put France into their 12th final and their first since 1991 when they upset the US.
