GOAL machine Davor Suker's two goals in a 3-0 win over Denmark here yesterday made Croatia the first team to book their place in the Euro 96 quarter finals.
Croatia reached the last eight in their first major championships, to the delight of their small but rowdy following.
Suker, who has scored an incredible 20 goals in 21 starts for the Balkan side, sent Peter Schmeichel the wrong way frog the penalty spot after Mario Stanic was brought down by the giant Danish keeper on 53 minutes.
The Real Madrid bound player sealed a remarkable performance with a sweetly taken second in the dying moments when he lifted a delightful left foot shot over Schmeichel.
Five minutes earlier, AC Milan star Zvonimir Boban ensured their passage into the next stage with a close range goal after brilliant work by Suker on the left.
Denmark, so disappointing, must now beat Turkey and hope Croatia beat Portugal convincingly for them to have any hope of retaining the crown they won so dramatically in 1992.
Croatia were without star striker Alen Boksic who was ruled out with the head injury he sustained in the unimpressive 1-0 win over Turkey.
He was replaced by Vlaovic, scorer of the superb winner against the Turks, but neither he nor Suker were given more than a half chance in the opening half hour.
