Stand up for Anthem

Just the Wokingham Stakes lacks an Irish runner today after Dermot Weld's Social Harmony didn't make it into the last 30, but there are realistic hopes of the visitors adding to their Royal total in the other five races.

Ordinarily, the Hardwicke Stakes would appear an ideal opportunity for Sunshine Street to break his Group race duck but this is no ordinary Hardwicke with the giant Royal Anthem involved.

The 17Th Canadian International winner, and course and distance winner here last year, ran a blinder on his seasonal reappearance in the Coronation Cup.

Royal Anthem was hopelessly put off by the cleverly-executed slowing tactics of Godolphin and Daylami eventually outpointed him. There was no disgrace in that but Royal Anthem should strip a lot fitter this time and also get the decent pace off which he thrives.

Sunshine Street actually finished ahead of Royal Anthem in the Breeders' Cup Turf in Kentucky, and although he gets a 5lb pull in the weights here, and put in a fine first run of the season behind Urban Ocean in the Gallinule, Sunshine Street will do well to stretch Royal Anthem.

The first of Aidan O'Brien's trio of runners today is High King in the King Edward VII Stakes but a third to Apparatchik in a Curragh Listed race doesn't really look good enough for this, especially with the Epsom Derby fourth Housemaster in opposition.

A reproduction of that Derby effort will give Housemaster an obvious chance but Derby runners have a patchy record in this and he looks worth opposing. Maybe the Affirmed colt Markan is the one to side with as he is an exceptionally smart worker at home, will act on the ground and will strip fresh.

O'Brien has Lavery for the King's Stand Stakes while Con Collins relies on the Greenlands Stakes fifth Lady Alexander. It would be no surprise if the filly came out the better of the two but over this stiff five furlongs it is difficult to oppose Lochangel.

Ian Balding's Nunthorpe winner will strip a lot fitter for her second to Tipsy Creek in Sandown's Temple Stakes and should be ideally suited by the course and trip.

Last year's Ascot Stakes winner is being turned out this time by Michael Grassick for the marathon Queen Alexandra Stakes and while the Chester Cup runner-up Generosity is the selection in that, O'Brien can hit the mark for the visitors in the Windsor Castle.

Rossini did nothing he was not entitled to do based on market support and pedigree at the Curragh when beating It Happens Now on soft to heavy ground but he will be much happier on a fast surface and this is not the strongest two-year-old race of the week.
