A mixture of youth, experience and local knowledge proved the ideal recipe in the high wind and squalling rain as Stackstown won their first FBD Barton Cup when they beat Lucan 4-1 in the second leg of the final at Stackstown on Saturday for an overall 7-3 victory. Three-time Leinster Seniors champion, Tom O'Donoghue, and 15-year-old John McDermott will have different reasons, however, for remembering this success. O'Donoghue has been on many Stackstown Barton Cup sides while the young McDermott, who partnered his brother Michael, a member of the Irish Boys' team which won the European Championship last month, was making a successful debut.

Leading 3-2 after the first leg in Lucan, the home side quickly set about the task of securing the necessary three points when the top match of Michael Keaty and Pierce McCormack were five up at the turn against Mervyn Eager and Liam Kilfoyle, while Ronan Flood, who won the Kilkenny Scratch Cup earlier this year, and Alan Browne turned six up on Colm McLoughlin and Tommy Thompson. The vital winning point came from the McDermott brothers when they beat Alan Reck and Aidan Buggle 4 and 2. The best golf of the day was, however in the bottom match, where the Stackstown pair of Pat Malone and Frank Kavanagh shared seven birdies with Toddy Dunne and Sean Quigley before they were called in from the 15th. It was sweet revenge for Stackstown who lost out to Lucan in the Bloom Cup final two weeks earlier.
