LOUTH SFC FINAL: St Patrick's 1-12 Baltinglass 0-14:ST PATRICK'S lifted the Miley Cup for the first time since 2006 with a dramatic winner in injury-time at Aughrim yesterday.
This was a game of nip and tuck football between two evenly matches sides and the scores were level 10 times over the hour.
Into the last five minutes Baltinglass had got their nose in front once more with points from Joey Kelly and Henry Sinnott and must have felt they were going to continue their record of having beaten the Wicklow Town men in every county final bar one.
But in one of the best county finals seen in many years, the play continued to ebb and flow to the very end. St Patrick’s applied the pressure, but the Baltinglass goalkeeper John Flynn made a good save from Tommy Kelly.
However, under pressure he held on to the ball too long and St Patrick’s were awarded a free for Matty Byrne to tie up the match for a 10th time.
Moments earlier St Patrick’s had sprung Donie Fitzgerald from the bench. It turned out to be an inspired substitution as in injury time and the result on a knife-edge Fitzgerald steered the winner between the sticks and in off the post for the winner.
This was a cracking game of football from the start. The score was 0-4 apiece after 20 minutes and the sides were deadlocked four times at that stage. The play continued in the same vein in the second half, with Baltinglass regaining the lead in the closing minutest with points by Joey Kelly and Henry Sinnott – 0-14 to 1-10.
