BASKETBALL/All-Ireland Schools' finals: St Gerald's, the Bank of Ireland Schools' Cup winners, claimed the All-Ireland League title yesterday with victory in the under-19 A final, at the ESB Arena in Tallaght.
Their opponents once more were Coláiste Eanna, who they convincingly beat last month, but this match proved a lot closer.
The two teams were locked on 21 points apiece at the break but St Gerard's opened up an eight-point lead in the third quarter.
Coláiste Eanna's Scott Kinevane managed to put just a basket between the two sides but Castlebar killed off the game with two tremendous scores from internationals Finin Canavan and Tommy Canavan and eventually ran out 45-39 winners.
The other three contests had a strong Cork involvement with Ballincollig Community College contesting the Boys Under-16 and Under-19 B contests.
The Under-16 B Cup went to Ballincollig with Killian Kelliher turning scoring 24 points in his side's 43-30 win over St Gerard's, Castlebar.
That aside it was an indifferent day for the Cork side with Our Lady's, Castleblaney, defeating Ballincollig Community College in the 48-31 in the Under -19 B final.
And in the Girls Senior B decider, Mount Temple accounted for Coláiste Choilm.
