Semenya's comeback delayed as meet cancelled
ATHLETICS:South African world 800 metres champion Caster Semenya's return to competitive athletics has been delayed as her comeback event in Zaragoza has been cancelled, her coach said yesterday.
The 19-year-old underwent gender verification tests after winning gold at the Berlin world championships last August and has not competed since.
“The meet (on June 24th) is off and we will make an announcement on Tuesday,” Semenya’s coach Michael Seme confirmed.
Athletics South Africa (ASA) has made clear Semenya is not banned from competition but said she must wait for the results of her tests from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) which are not expected to be announced until June.
Her lawyers said in April the tests proved she would be entitled to run as a female.
Monier attacks to take 17th Giro stage
CYCLING:Frenchman Damien Monier attacked on the final climb to claim victory on stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia yesterday.
The Confidis rider launched an attack with three kilometres remaining to finish the 173km stage from Bruneck to Peio Terme 36 seconds ahead of Danilo Hondo (Lampre), with Steven Kruijswijk (Rabobank) three further back.
Spain’s David Arroyo (Caisse d’Epargne) retained the race leader’s pink jersey to lie two minutes 27 seconds ahead of Ivan Basso (Liquigas). Richie Porte (Saxo Bank) is third, nine more seconds back.
Monier was part of a 19-man group which broke away just before the first climb of the day up the Passo della Palade.
Today’s 18th stage sees the peloton travel 156km from Levico Terme to Brescia.
Stewards inquiries live from Epsom
RACING:Stewards' inquiries will be broadcast live for the first time at this year's Investec Derby meeting at Epsom.
The BBC are covering the two-day Classic fixture, which begins tomorrow week, and their cameras will allow the public to see the crucial workings of racing’s referees.
The deliberations of the stewards have taken place behind closed doors for nearly 250 years but as part of the Racing For Change campaign, inquiries will be shown on a trial basis.
RFC are aiming to broaden the appeal of the sport and will gain feedback from the public and participants to this latest initiative.
They also hope the trial will help the sport to be more transparent.
Nic Coward, chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority, said: “British racing leads other major sports in how it manages its disciplinary functions.
“We believe running this trial will help demystify an important aspect of racing whilst adding to the excitement and drama of race day.”
Jenkins to miss Wales Tests
RUGBY:Wales will be without prop Gethin Jenkins for their Tests against Tri-Nations heavyweights South Africa and New Zealand next month.
Jenkins’ injury-hit season has concluded with him being sidelined for up to six weeks.
A calf muscle problem means the 73 times-capped Cardiff Blues loosehead will not feature in next week’s Millennium Stadium appointment with the Springboks, plus clashes against New Zealand in Dunedin on June 19 and Hamilton seven days later.
Wales boss Warren Gatland has not yet summoned a replacement for Jenkins, although Ospreys front-row forward Craig Mitchell features on the stand-by list.
Gatland named a 27-man squad earlier this month, with Paul James, John Yapp and Adam Jones now the remaining props. f
