McGuinness poised for Donegal job
GAELIC GAMES: JIM McGUINNESS looks certain to be appointed as the new Donegal senior football manager next week, writes Ciarán Daly.
He was the only candidate who applied for the position by the time the deadline of midnight on Monday evening elapsed. He looks sure to inherit the position vacated by John Joe Doherty, following defeats to Down and Armagh in this year’s Championship.
Donegal county board secretary Aodh Máirtín O’Fearraigh said the decision should be ratified at a county executive meeting on Monday night in Ballybofey.
“I can’t foresee any problems. He was the only candidate for the job and he was certainly the only person to declare that interest publicly. He has the credentials to do well.”
McGuinness guided the Donegal under-21 side to the All-Ireland final in May when they were beaten by Dublin by 1-10 to 1-08.
“No one gave the under-21 team a chance at the beginning of the year and they just missed out on the All-Ireland title. He possibly is the best man to bring that talent through to senior level,” added O’Fearraigh.
