Williams to use Renault engines

FORMULA ONE:Williams have revived memories of their Formula One glory years by announcing a return in 2012 to the Renault engines that powered them to a string of titles in the 1990s.

The team, who are currently with Cosworth and also have a relationship with Indian-owned Jaguar outside of Formula One, said they had agreed a long-term chassis-engine partnership with the French manufacturer.

The deal means the British team will use the same engines as world champions Red Bull next season and extends to 2013 with a view to continuing after the introduction of a new V6 turbo in 2014.

“Our previous relationship with Renault was one of the most successful in Williams’ history but we will not allow ourselves to dwell too much on the past,” said team principal Frank Williams.

Dunbar leads Ireland team

GOLF: Alan Dunbar, who came so close to lifting the Brabazon Trophy in Somerset last month, spearheads the Irish challenge in the European Amateur Team Championship on Portugal's Algarve over the next five days.

The Rathmore star appears to have run into form at just the right time having disappointed in the British Amateur Championship in Lancashire – and he is truly fired up for the gruelling event.

“I hope to continue the momentum from Burnham and Berrow,” said Dunbar who missed out on Brabazon glory by a stroke.

Portstewart’s Paul Cutler, who won the Lytham Trophy last year, has rather lost his form and is anxious to regain it to cement his place in the Walker Cup team for September’s transatlantic clash in Aberdeen.. This week would be the ideal time for him to return to his best.

Kevin Phelan, who qualified for last year’s US Open and then made his international debut for Ireland in the Home Internationals at Ashburnham in Wales, plays in his first European Championship.

Eoin Arthurs from Forest Little, Paul Dunne of Greystones and Limerick’s Pat Murray complete the line-up, with Kevin Flanagan the captain.

Ireland won the title at Western Gailes in 2007 and retained their crown the following year in Italy, but have disappointed since then and finished 14th in Sweden last month.

With more than 20 nations competing over the Victoria Course the competition will be fierce. England defend the title they won a year ago when they beat Sweden in the final.

Competitors play 36 holes strokeplay today and tomorrow, with five of the six scores counting each day, then the countries are split into flights for the match-play stages.

Meanwhile, Ballymena’s Dermot McElroy will be looking to inspire his team-mates as Ireland bid for glory in the European Boys Team Championship over the Zbraslav course in Prague, also starting today.

Haye says he 'would love' a rematch with Klitschko

BOXING: David Haye has urged Wladimir Klitschko to finish the job after reiterating that he "would love" to face the Ukrainian in a rematch.

The Londoner’s bid to add the WBO and IBF titles to his WBA crown ended in a disappointing, one-sided points defeat in Hamburg on Saturday night.

Trainer Adam Booth believes the “Hayemaker” should stick to his plan and hang up his gloves by his 31st birthday in October.

However, Haye has admitted he could prolong his career for a second crack at Klitschko, and believes the Ukrainian could be tempted by another bumper pay day, despite his manager Bernd Boente saying there was “no chance” of a rematch.

“The guy’s beaten me and obviously I’d love the opportunity to challenge for his titles,” insisted Haye. “In boxing anything’s possible.

“He gave it his best shots and couldn’t put me out. Maybe he’ll want the opportunity to knock me out and finish my career,” he said.

Paralympians swim personal bests

SWIMMING:Bethany Firth finished fourth in the S14 200m freestyle final at the Paralympic European Championships in Berlin.

In her first major championships at just 15, Firth swam a lifetime best of 2.20.33 to finish fourth behind Marlo van der Kulk 2.14.74 of the Netherlands.

James Scully, Jonathan McGrath and Ellen Keane also swam lifetime bests. Scully swam 38.26sec in the S5 50m freestyle. John McGrath swam 31.37sec in the S8 50m freestyle, while Keane knocked three seconds off her SM9 individual medley personal best clocking a time of 2.41.13.

Firth commented, “I really enjoyed swimming in the finals tonight, it was great to have my first swim at the championships and I’m really now looking forward to the rest of the competition.”

Scully said: “I felt strong throughout. A 50 free would not be my best event so it was great to start the meet off so positively.”

McLaren have battle ahead

FORMULA ONE: McLaren have four races to convince Lewis Hamilton he must stay with the team where he has been for half his life.

Talks are due on an extension to Hamilton’s five-year contract but the 26-year-old has expressed his frustration this season at his McLaren car’s lack of performance.

Hamilton has a break clause that comes into force in December which would enable him to sign for another team.
