Liverpool set to remain at Anfield

SOCCER:Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre insists a multi-million redevelopment of Anfield will enhance the club's transfer market spending power and not diminish it.

On the second anniversary of Fenway Sports Group’s purchase of the club, Ayre formally confirmed their intention to remain at their current home and not pursue a new build project in Stanley Park.

That decision was made on the back of Liverpool City Council announcing extensive plans for a regeneration of the Anfield area, with a housing association set to also invest heavily.

Redevelopment of the Main Stand and Anfield Road end is likely to cost an estimated £150 million (€186m) and while nothing has been forthcoming as yet on how this money will be procured Ayre said it would not impact on football matters.

"As we've said, the right solution is the right economic solution," Ayre told liverpoolfc.com. "More so from it detracting from our spending in the transfer market, the whole point of doing this is to actually increase our revenues."

Hughes rides remarkable 10,168-1 seven-timer

RACING:Jockey Richard Hughes rode a remarkable 10,168 to 1 seven-timer at Windsor yesterday. Irishman Hughes (39) won the first five races on Pivotal Movement (13 to 8), East Texas Red (5 to 2), Embankment (7 to 1), Magic Secret (4 to 1) and Links Drive Lady (5 to 2).

His winning run at the course was halted when he finished third on Ever Fortune (2 to 1) in the sixth race, but he took victory in the last two on Duke of Clarence (7 to 4) and Mama Quilla (15 to 8).

Hughes punched the air as he passed the winning post on Mama Quilla, before making a flying dismount on his return to the paddock. “I’m over the moon – it’s great to do it. I always said I might do it one day at Windsor, my lucky track. Without Richard Hannon I wouldn’t be doing any of it.”

Three of Hughes’s seven winners were for trainer and father-in-law Hannon. A spokesperson for Paddy Power bookmakers said: “Hughesie getting beaten in the sixth leg saved us a payout that would have been close to €2 million.

“It’s still been an expensive day as one punter won €85,000.”

Lawlor does not fear Germany

SOCCER:Manchester City's Ian Lawlor felt Keiren Westwood's pain on Friday night but doesn't expect his Republic of Ireland Under-19s to suffer a similar crushing from Germany in tonight's concluding Uefa Championship qualifier.

With both Ireland and Germany beating Luxembourg and Macedonia in the opening matches to already qualify for the elite stage, this meeting between them in Grevenmacher, Luxembourg (6pm) will decide top spot.

Sixteen-year-old Lawlor has sampled success this season, gaining promotion to the Manchester City first-team squad for a pre-season trip to Austria and netting a two-year contract extension from Roberto Mancini. However, today’s game represents the toughest of his international tests so far.

“We’re already through to the elite stage but beating Germany to finish top is our aim,” said the ex-Home Farm player.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND (probable): Lawlor (Manchester City); Baba (Castlebar Celtic), Sweeney (Reading), Hoban (Watford, capt), Griffin (Reading); Gallagher (Burnley), Sadlier (West Ham Utd), Miele (Newcastle United); Drennan (Aston Villa), Byrne (Manchester United), Garmston (WBA).
