Poland at risk of losing Euro 2012

POLAND RISKS losing the right to co-host Euro 2012 after Fifa and Uefa said soccer's governing bodies did not recognise the administrator appointed on Monday by the Polish government to run the country's FA.

"Fifa and Uefa will immediately start joint consultation to decide the measures to be taken regarding the PZPN (FA) and the future of Polish football," said a joint statement yesterday.

It added that any sanctions against Poland would be decided at Fifa's executive committee meeting in Zurich on October 23rd-24th.

A Fifa spokesman confirmed that one measure available to the world governing body is to ban a member country from all levels of the game. If suspended, Poland would risk losing the right to co-host the Euro 2012 championship with Ukraine.

A Uefa spokesman said. "But this is the most serious situation that can happen and, of course, we are very concerned about the situation since Poland is hosting Euro 2012."

Quinn confident of Keane extending stay on Wearside

SUNDERLAND CHAIRMAN Niall Quinn is confident manager Roy Keane will sign a new contract within weeks. Keane is in the final year of his current three-year deal, but has repeatedly insisted he is relaxed about the future.

However, Quinn yesterday revealed initial talks with Keane's solicitor, Michael Kennedy, began last week after funding for the next two years was secured - Quinn would not comment on reports that Irish-American businessman Ellis Short has acquired a 30 per cent stake in Drumaville, the consortium which owns the club - and he is optimistic of a positive outcome.

Quinn said: "We have just opened up negotiations with Roy's solicitor last week, and that will move along nicely, I hope . . . I am pretty confident we will have something nice to say in the next few weeks.

"I didn't want to go to Roy Keane with a new contract offer when I couldn't tell him what was happening in 12 months' time . . . Now hopefully this year, we will be okay and maybe a couple after."
