Bruce resigned to losing Valencia

WIGAN Athletic manager Steve Bruce has conceded it is “inevitable” Luis Antonio Valencia will leave the English Premier League club.

The Ecuador international winger was strongly linked with a move away from the JJB Stadium during January’s transfer window, but Wigan kept hold of him.

Real Madrid failed in a loan move for Valencia, while Manchester United are believed to be lining up a swoop for the wideman in the summer.

Bruce is resigned to losing the 23-year-old and is already looking at possible replacements for Valencia.

“It’s inevitable he is leaving. There is so much interest in him – not just in this country but around the world,” Bruce said. “We are talking about the biggest clubs in this country and Spain and beyond.

“There was a loan deal put to us by Real Madrid but it was not acceptable. We do have someone in mind to come in, but that is five months off.”

Harte pulls out of St Mirren move

IAN Harte yesterday pulled out of his move to St Mirren, less than 24 hours after agreeing to join the club. The 31-year-old former Leeds full back was expected to make his debut in today’s Scottish Cup tie at Motherwell.

The former Republic of Ireland international, however, rang St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson to say he had changed his mind adding that he wanted to stay in England.

Harte was released by Blackpool earlier this month and that made him available for free outside the transfer window.

Adams focused on job at hand

PORTSMOUTH manager Tony Adams is ignoring newspaper speculation surrounding his future as he prepares his side for today’s clash with Liverpool at Fratton Park.

The club have fiercely denied reports that former Charlton and West Ham manager Alan Curbishley is lined up to take over at the south coast club in place of Adams, who has won only two of 15 league games since he succeeded Harry Redknapp in October.

Former Arsenal and England captain Adams still believes he has the backing of Portsmouth owner Sacha Gaydamak despite six defeats in the last seven Premier League games.

Adams said: “It’s not my job to focus on what the newspapers say. My job is the manager of Portsmouth Football Club and I’ll continue to do that until they tell me they don’t want me.

“I’ve had regular conversations with the owner in the last few days . . . But there has been no suggestion they don’t want me to just get on with it.
