Everton crashed out of the League Cup last night when they lost 1-0 at home to second division Oxford United. Much-travelled forward Joey Beauchamp scored a 12th-minute goal to give Oxford a 1-0 aggregate victory following the goalless first-leg two weeks ago.

Everton started with just two of the side that beat West Ham on Sunday - David Weir and Richard Dunne - and gave full debuts to Phil Jevons and Peter Degn. Oxford took advantage of the reorganisation to score the decisive goal as Beauchamp, who had struck the bar moments earlier, fired home from 12 metres after Matt Murphy's nod down.

Coventry were another Premiership side to exit the competition, though the damage had been done in their 5-1 first leg loss at first division Tranmere a fortnight ago. A long-range special from Gary McAllister and a quickfire two goals from Moroccan forward Youssef Chippo just before the interval gave Coventry a 3-1 half-time lead, with Scott Taylor replying for Tranmere. But, despite some intense pressure, the Premiership outfit were unable to make further inroads into Tranmere's lead and went out 6-4 on aggregate.

Meanwhile, under-pressure Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Wilson will be able to enjoy a restful night's sleep after his side finally ended their woeful winless streak with a 3-1 victory over Stoke at Hillsborough.
