Tottenham defender Gary Doherty's controversial red card in the 1-1 draw at Everton eight days ago has been rescinded by the Football Association after referee David Elleray admitted he made a mistake in sending off the Republic of Ireland international.

But Harrow schoolmaster Elleray looks to be sticking to his guns over Gus Poyet's dismissal in the same match. Tottenham have appealed against it and the incident will now be reviewed by the FA's video advisory panel.

Having captured Marlet, who has scored once in a handful of appearances for France, Cottagers boss Jean Tigana has taken his spending since Fulham gained promotion to the £40 million sterling-mark and he has said he does not intend to stop using Mohamed Al Fayed's cash just yet.

Wales could be without eight first-choice players for Saturday's World Cup clash with Armenia in Cardiff following another glut of injury problems for manager Mark Hughes.

The injury roll call increased alarmingly yesterday after the Bank Holiday programme, with three more players almost certainly ruled out.

Wales already knew John Hartson and Nathan Blake would be out through suspension and then they lost captain Gary Speed and his midfield colleague Mark Pembridge from the weekend fixtures.

Speed damaged a hamstring in Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Sunderland, while Pembridge suffered a recurrence of his calf problem in Everton's 2-0 win over Middlesbrough.

Scotland coach Craig Brown will not draft any extra players into his squad to cover the absence of Preston striker Kevin Gallacher.

The former Blackburn and Newcastle forward has been ruled out of the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Croatia and Belgium with a hamstring injury.

Argentinian defender Leandro Cufre agreed a five-year deal with Italian first division champions AS Roma yesterday. Cufre, whose current club is Gimnasiay Esgrima de La Plata, agreed to the move which will be worth around £3.5 million sterling to the Argentinian club.

Serie A club Lazio have denied Spanish newspaper reports linking central defender Alessandro Nesta with a move to Real Madrid.
