Pat Smullen will attempt to follow in the Australian footprints of his predecessor Michael Kinane by riding Make No Mistake in the BMW Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in 10 days.
Trainer Dermot Weld confirmed yesterday that stable jockey Smullen will travel to Melbourne to renew his partnership with the Moyglare Stud-owned colt. It had been thought that the young jockey would remain in Ireland to ride at Leopardstown on the same day, possibly leaving the Make No Mistake ride free for a local rider.
Weld's former stable jockey Kinane won the Melbourne Cup on Vintage Crop on his first visit to Australia in 1993.
"Make No Mistake is out of quarantine at Sandown racecourse and is now being stabled at Caulfield. David Phillips, of Vintage Crop fame, is with the horse and is very happy with his condition," Weld said yesterday.
The Curragh trainer also confirmed his dual Group Three winner Major Force on track for the Group One Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Sunday. Smullen will also take that ride.
