Hume wraps up provincial Grand Slam

JACK HUME from Rathsallagh GC completed the Boys' Grand Slam by winning the fourth and final provincial championship of 2010 at Muskerry last week.

Hume finished in style with a final round 69 to take the Munster title by a six-shot margin, despite the valiant efforts of Conor Glynn from Carton House to close the gap with a superb final round course-record-equalling 66.

Hume's achievement equals that of Raymond Burns in 1989 and he will now have his sights set on the Irish Boys title at Dungarvan on August 18th-20th. Hume, who also equalled the course record in his opening 66, added 69, 71 and 69 for a 275 total with Glynn second and Colm O'Sullivan from Fota Island third on 282.

Carey and Downey in camogie classic

KILKENNY legends DJ Carey and Ann Downey will be just two of the many stars involved in the annual Camogie Association Golf Classic at Kilkenny City Golf Club on Friday, August 13th.

A weekend of top sporting action is in store as the Gala All-Ireland senior camogie semi-finals take place at Nowlan Park the following day, Saturday, August 14th. Champions Cork face Galway, while Leinster neighbours Wexford and Kilkenny play in the second tie.

The golf event invites teams of four, both male and female, to participate at the picturesque 18-hole golf course.

Downey, who managed Kilkenny to last year's All-Ireland final, losing to Cork, acknowledged her side has a tough task on their hands against Wexford.

"Any semi-final is tough and all of the teams remaining are of top quality so there is no such thing as an easy draw," she said.

Magee lands second Lady Captain's prize at Coollattin

GOLFERS are always looking for lucky omens and maybe Patricia Magee has just found one. Recently she won the Lady Captain's (Anna Rochford) Prize at Coollattin Golf Club in Co Wicklow.

Amazingly, it was her second such success in the Lady Captain's competition since joining the club in 2005. The seven-handicapper shot two rounds of 72 for a 36-hole total of 144 and a two-stroke winning margin over another single figure golfer, Leanne Brennan (6), with Kathleen Hill (19) third on 147 and Anne Ryan (9) taking the gross prize on a score of 174.

Magee, a daughter of famous broadcaster Jimmy, also won Helen Kinsella Lady Captain's Prize in 2007.

In that same year, her sister June won the Lady Captain's Prize in Greystones, while this year her brother Mark won the Captain's Prize in Slade Valley, so perhaps it is a lucky omen for her when one of her sibling wins at another club.

Meanwhile, while Brennan narrowly missed out on the top prize, she did have the consolation of setting a course record at Coollattin. After a nett score of 77 in round one, the six-handicapper then played some tremendous golf in the second round as she shot a one-over par 75 gross for the record, and a nett 69 and runner's-up spot behind Magee.

The good scoring by both Magee and Brennan saw them cut a shot off their handicaps for their efforts.

Daly cruises home in Edmondstown

ROSS Fisher wasn't the only golfer shooting 61 on the way to victory last weekend.

While the Englishman achieved his score on his way to victory in the 3 Irish Open in Killarney, Orna Daly also had a similar score in Edmondstown.

Playing in the Lady Vice-President's (Carol Shatter) Prize, Daly, playing off a handicap of 18, shot a nett 61 to leave the rest of the field trailing in her wake.

While Fisher had just two shots to spare over Ireland's Pádraig Harrington, Daly's nearest challenger was Nora Ryan (23,) who was eight strokes adrift on 69, while the gross winner was Aoife Cousins (12) with a gross 83.

Not surprisingly after her wonderful score Daly has lost shots on her handicap and will now be playing off 15.

CASTLETROY sisters Chloe and Eimear Ryan fired an impressive 39 points to win the May Fitzgibbon National Foursomes title at Greystones Golf Club last Monday.

On a day of good scoring, the sisters had just one point to spare over Ballyclare's Hannah Henderson and Victoria Craig of Clandeboye.

Another pair of sisters, Jean and Jill O'Driscoll from Muskerry, were in third place on 32 points, while Emma Brogan and Amy Gillen of County Meath claimed the gross prize with 22 points.
