Teddy Sheringham yesterday agreed to stay at Manchester United for another year after manager Alex Ferguson assured him he would not buy a new striker.

The 34-year-old could have moved to another club on a free transfer but instead has signed a new one-year contract with the champions. Sheringham had been worried about being pushed further into the background at Old Trafford.

But the breakdown of Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy's £18.5 million move from PSV Eindhoven, combined with Ferguson's promise not to look for another forward, has reassured Sheringham he has at least another year at the very top of English football.

Glasgow Rangers captain Lorenzo Amoruso claims that communication between him and manager Dick Advocaat has broken down. The Ibrox defender recognises that his career with the champions looks bleak despite helping the club to a second successive title.
