Bohemians 1 Glentoran 1:BOHEMIANS' MANAGER Pat Fenlon is looking forward to a semi-final meeting with Linfield, if a bit miffed at losing out on hosting the second leg.
Fenlon became something of a cult hero in a playing spell at Windsor Park in the mid-1990s, affectionately nicknamed “Billy” by the Linfield fans, due to their reluctance to call him Pat.
“I was at Linfield three years,” recalled Fenlon. “I won a league, a couple of cups and a few other trophies that they have up there. I always like going back. I haven’t been back managing a team since the Shels days so I’m delighted to be going back and looking forward to it.” Though they had already qualified, Bohemians failure to beat Glentoran on Saturday meant that Linfield’s 1-0 win over St Patrick’s pipped them for a semi-final seeding, meaning they will be away in the second leg.
“That’s a bit of a blow for us. But we’ll get them here and, again, I’m sure they’ll bring a big crowd and it will be a good atmosphere.”
Mark Quigley was unlucky not to give Bohemians a 10th-minute lead when his curling shot came back off the crossbar. Glentoran, last year’s beaten finalists, capitalised on their best spell of the match early in the second half to take a 51st-minute lead.
Keith Gillespie’s cross found Gary Hamilton who headed home.
Bohemians were level on the hour. Anto Murphy headed down Quigley’s cross and Raffaele Cretaro drilled the ball to the net for his first goal for the club.
Linfield 1 St Patrick's Athletic 0:LINFIELD MIGHT have defeated St Pat's at sunsoaked Windsor Park on Saturday – but both teams were winners in the end.
In spite of Peter Thompson’s 90th minute winner, St Patrick’s progressed to the semi-finals of the cross-border competition along with Linfield. St Patrick’s will face Sligo Rovers in the semis.
Just when this Group Three tie in Belfast looked like it was heading for a draw, Thompson, back at his former club via a loan spell from English League outfit Stockport, nicked victory in the final seconds.
The striker played on after Aidan’s O’Kane’s cross appeared to be handled by Shane Guthrie and drilled the ball past Gary Rogers as referee David Malcolm allowed play to continue.
